Ryanair fly direct from Stanstead to Pescara, which is about 50 minutes by car from the house. Car hire, essential for this holiday, is available from the airport. Alternatively, Rome is about 2.5 hours drive from the house with flights available from Gatwick and Heathrow. The journey to Abruzzo takes you by motorway through some lovely scenery on little used roads.: Once settled at the house, there is plenty to explore and enjoy in the surrounding area.
For beach lovers, the house is only a forty minute drive from the sandy beaches of the Adriatic, with great seafood restaurants. The waterpark at Tortoreto is a big favourite with children. On your way back, stop off at one of the many wineries and sample and purchase some of the amazing local wines. ( A five litre box of good red costs about 8 euros ). The city of Pescara offers plenty of opportunity for shopping and eating out and Rome is only a two and a half drive, easily manageable as a day trip.
Nearer to home, the mediaeval town of Penne is only fifteen minutes drive and is a delightful market town with beautiful cobbled streets, shops and bars aswell as a couple of larger out-of-town supermarkets and good sporting facilities.
Whilst it easy to escape at La Casa Felice and enjoy the tranquillity and seclusion, the house is not isolated and there are many small and interesting villages within easy striking distance. In the winter there are numerous ski resorts close by and the Furnicular at Campo Imperatore ( where Mussolini was imprisoned at the end of WWII ) runs throughout the Summer.
There is something for everyone here – just don’t expect Ibiza style nightlife! Although there IS a dance in the village bar every Saturday throughout the Summer – if you thought Italians didn’t do line-dancing, come along for a surprise!!
